Notes on a Ponytail

We all covet the perfect ponytail.  Some of us aren't blessed with a respectable amount of hair to put up in that ever so coquettish ponytail so we have to fake it.

Here are some great products to help you on the way to the perfect ponytail...

1. Toppix:  If you don't have the strongest hairline, either from breakage or traction alopecia... this is a must have  product.  Toppix is hair fibers that are available in a range of tones to match your hair color.  You simply apply the product to your thinning edges and brush into your hair.  It blends seamlessly and gives the illusion of thicker hair ( who doesn't love that? )

2. Tancho Stick:  Who knew that Indonesian's knew the secret to taming unruly edges.  Edges is a word that only those who have them know what we're talking about.  So if you have them... change your life... try this lavender wax pomade stick that tames even the unruliest of edges without a heavy  petroleum or mineral oil product.

Threaded Twist Hairstyle

A Fancy Nancy side ponytail.......

Begin with a section parted from ear to ear and a side ponytail. Speaking of side ponytails, did anyone else notice that the eighties styles are coming back in? (Even for moms.) I actually went shopping for the first time in a LONG time the other day and ended up buying some "stretch pants" and a long sweater dress thingy! I swear I had the same outfit in 3rd grade. And.....it's a good thing the sweater is long. (Because well.... lets just say that the stretch pants are not as flattering as I remember them being in 3rd grade, lol.) Anyway, back to hair.......
threaded braids
At the back of your part, part out another strip of hair and make some twist braids all the way along it.
Don't go all the way down to her ear with the "strip of hair." Leave the sides as they are for now.Make a loose french braid from one side to the other with the remaining hair. With this braid, only take hair from the front. And what I mean by "loose" is; hold it out across the back part as you're braiding. You want it to cover the part later. End the braid with a clear elastic by her ear and add the ends to the ponytail.Using your finger as a guide...... Thread the twist braids up through the french braid.
Ooops I missed a spot, oh well. Anyway, as you can see...... all the twists are threaded through the braid. Notice that you can still see the part. We'll fix that in a minute.
If you made the french braid loose enough, you should be able to sort of pull it down over the part by gently tugging on the twists as you add them to the ponytail. If you want to cover the elastic where you ended the braid, add a cute flower to the side. Oh and of course we had to add some bobby pin flowers to the ponytail as well.twist braidsWe braided in a few more twists in the ponytail at different lengths, just for fun.french braidsside ponytail The end.

Looks we Love: Notes on a Ponytail

Claudia Gerini thank you!

With winter approaching in most of the U.S. we're grappling here at Sunny's with how to protect our tresses from the stress of winter wool, cashmere and harsh heating units on our ends.

Any healthy hair freak knows that exposing your ends during the Winter is a sure-fire way to have to chop off atleast two inches of hair by Spring. So... the ponytail is the go-to style.

But... after a few days of uninspired ponytails...it left us wondering...there has to be more than slicking your hair into a ponytail like an 11 year old.

Well thank Claudia Gerini for your tousled poufy pony that adds a understated elegant twist to our winter ponytail regime.

Working with Textured Ponytails

With the holidays approaching a great way to mix it up is to use a textured ponytail piece.

We have to great and affordable lines that feature natural looking textured ponytails: Forever Young and Sensational.

Forever Young has two products that we love: Kookie Curls and Cozy

Sensationnel has the Instant Pony 006.

We love that these three ponytails mimic natural African American Hair. To work with these pieces it's best to mess them up A LOT! Don't be afraid to take your brush and work through them to release the uniform curl pattern.

Styling Tips:

1. Don't just plop the ponytail onto you slicked down hair suddenly. It always gives away that you are wearing a ponytail.

2. Consider embracing your natural texture and creating volume in the front with a pump ponytail or pin curling your two strand twists in to a bang at front.

3. Recreate a faux hawk with the help of a textured ponytail. Slick your hair down only on the sides and then add volume in the center of your hair with a strategically placed textured ponytail in the middle.

These products can be found at Sunny's Hair & Wigs Retail locations in Mesa, Goodyear, Scottsdale, Minneapolis and Atlanta. The Forever Young Ponytails retail at $14.99 and the Sensationnel Ponytail retails for $11.99
